Rent my Apartment! Please!

•February 4, 2010 • 1 Comment

This Tuesday is my two year Anniversary of moving to Lawrence, KS. Awesome, right? Yea, I know it is. So anyways, 2 years ago I moved to Kansas with no car, no job, and very little money. I needed a place fast, cheap & decent. That place was Birchwood Garden Apartments (map above).

My boys (13 & 10 yrs old) and I have lived happily in this cute 2 bdrm/1bath apartment this whole time… However, they’re at that age where I believe we ALL need some personal space. I’m sure you don’t want a long drawn out story so I’ll get down to the deets:

  • 2 bedrooms
  • 1 bath
  • multiple laundry facilities in complex
  • snack machine
  • great neighborhood – mostly college students who are amazingly quiet.
  • Schools: Cordley Elementary, Central Jr High, and Lawrence High
  • Very close to KU (most students either walk or bike)
  • Quick snow removal
  • Very nice landlord
  • No pets
  • $445/month (cheap but not ghetto)
  • Lease renewal in July/August.

In 2009 hundreds of millions of people around the world showed their support by turning off their lights for one hour.
Earth Hour 2010 will continue to be a global call to action to every individual, every business and every community. A call to stand up, to show leadership and be responsible for our future.
Earth Hour started in 2007 in Sydney, Australia when 2.2 million homes and businesses turned their lights off for one hour to make their stand against climate change. Only a year later and Earth Hour had become a global sustainability movement with more than 50 million people across 35 countries participating. Global landmarks such as the, Sydney Harbour Bridge, The CN Tower in Toronto, The Golden Gate Bridge in San Francisco, and Rome’s Colosseum, all stood in darkness, as symbols of hope for a cause that grows more urgent by the hour.
In March 2009, hundreds of millions of people took part in the third Earth Hour. Over 4000 cities in 88 countries officially switched off to pledge their support for the planet, making Earth Hour 2009 the world’s largest global climate change initiative.
Earth Hour 2010 takes place on Saturday 27 March at 8.30pm (local time) and is a global call to action to every individual, every business and every community throughout the world. It is a call to stand up, to take responsibility, to get involved and lead the way towards a sustainable future. Iconic buildings and landmarks from Europe to Asia to the Americas will stand in darkness. People across the world from all walks of life will turn off their lights and join together in celebration and contemplation of the one thing we all have in common – our planet. So sign up now and let’s make 2010 the biggest Earth Hour yet!.
It’s Showtime! Show the world what can be done.

Hey Don’t Be a Winter Noob!

As most of you know I moved from Wahiawa, Hawaii to Lawrence, Kansas for LOVE! Yes, I said love, so stop asking me if I was really drunk or dumb to make such a move, cause honestly, yea, I really was. I kid, I kid. I love Lawrence.

This is my second winter here in fabulous Lawrence & I thought it might be funny to share some things I’ve learned about living in snow & making it through a snowpocalypse. It may not be funny to all you locals who are accustomed to living in this cold white vomit for months at a time, but I’ll give it a shot anyways.

  1. Icicle Doo – If you leave your house with your hair still wet from the shower like you did in the spring/summer months, it will indeed freeze! This was not an experiment I did on purpose. I was pumping my gas before I headed to work & in that 5 minutes my hair REALLY froze. I started to panic & called my Mom in Alabama, she lectured me about getting pneumonia. When I mentioned it to a couple locals, they laughed. Noob.
  2. Snow Chains – I grew up in California & every time we felt like venturing up the mountain to Big Bear to check out the snow, we needed snow chains. For awhile in my 20s I worked at an auto parts store that was located pretty close to the base of Big Bear and it was hard to keep snow chains on our shelves during the winter months. So naturally I thought that if there was snow, I needed snow chains, makes sense right? Try asking someone in Lawrence where to buy snow chains for your Lawrence to Overland Park commute and they will laugh at you. Noob.
  3. Black Ice – I’m sure you’ve heard the term black ice, right? If you live in Kansas of course you have. Up until recently (today sadly), I thought black ice only referred to the ice that made you slip & slide on the highways, or actually anywhere there was asphalt. This isn’t true. My ass met black ice on the sidewalk this morning and I’d like to say ice & I, we’re done professionally. Forever.
  4. zOMG Sledding – I still haven’t gone sledding this season, however it’s not for a lack of trying. People will suggest many ways to be ghetto when you don’t own a sled…  shovels, wax paper, tarps, multiple layers of cardboard taped together.  Let me tell you what doesn’t work with a full grown adult when it comes to ghetto sledding… a cookie sheet, a plastic drawer, two plastic drawers, and a large casserole dish. Noob. I’m buying a sled this weekend, definitely. Knowing my luck the minute I buy a sled, the snow will disappear & if that happens, you’re welcome.
  5. Snow Attire – Things that I brought with me that are completely opposed to snow, cold, ice… my flip flops (ice/water/snow = slippage on ass), my sarong (though it does make a nice scarf on occasion), and pretty much all of my clothes. Here’s a little unknown fact – you cannot buy winter coats in Hawaii.

I’ve learned so much in my two years that of course, I can’t remember everything and I’m *still* learning. If you have any funny winter stories, tips for us noobs, or suggestions, please feel free to share in the comments.

Until next time… stay warm Lawrence!

I’m not sure why the new Noodles & Company that opened on Mass Street is pissing me off so much, but it is. It could be because over the past year I’ve seen local businesses fall in our beloved downtown of Lawrence. It could be because I sat at a Lawrence original restaurant on Monday night for well over an hour during dinner & noticed we were the only customers. It could be because I actually liked the little gift shop that sat on that corner before the chain restaurant went in. It could be that I really don’t like anything on the menu there and knew this prior to them opening. It could be any or all of these things, but no matter what it is, I just know it’s pissing me off. Don’t get me wrong, I’m not opposed to buying stuff from a chain – I do love me a Cheesy Gordita Crunch from Taco Bell on occasion, but I feel differently about Mass Street.

Much of what makes up Lawrence’s unique personality can be found in one place: Massachusetts Street. Here you can find the combination of events, places, people and history all mixed together in one experience. One of the best things to do is to just take a stroll up and down Mass Street and see what you find. On both sides of the streets for several blocks are dozens of local shops, numerous bars and restaurants, unique coffeehouses, music venues like the Granada and Liberty Hall, galleries and art shops, bookstores, and even park areas like the Japanese Garden and South Park at the end of the downtown strip.

We should be preserving the downtown area of Mass by encouraging & supporting our originals, our Mom & Pop shops, eateries and so on. Spending your money downtown with local businesses supports the local economy. We live here, so why we shouldn’t we be supporting it?

Lawrence Original Restaurant owners hire, buy, and spend within the community. National chains restaurants are at the mercy of decisions that are made at corporate headquarters which have little consideration of the impact on or the fate of local citizens in each community. Instead, they cater to shareholders and outside owners’ interests. (taken from the Lawrence Originals Website)

It’s not just about the food but other downtown business as well. Christmas is only 23 days away and if you’re still looking for your last minute gifts may I suggest the following downtown stores:

  • Weaver’s Department Store – 901 Mass – has continued to thrive for over 150 years on Mass St in the heart of Downtown Lawrence.
  • Englewood Florist – 1101 Mass – This full service florist offers a wide selection of fresh flowers, beautiful house plants, silk arrangements, and candy. Local and FTD delivery services available.
  • The Casbah – 803 Mass – Find unique and beautiful handcrafted gifts that reflect a distant culture and have been created with simple designs. These gifts are perfect for your home, your life, or for special occasions.
  • Waxman Candles – 609 Mass – This store produces premium, quality candles and specializes in silhouette candles. Find something for everyone at this unique store.
  • Hobbs – 700 Mass – Lifestyle store offering everything from dishes and clothing to bath and body products. An array of unique specialty items is also available.
  • The Toy Store – 936 Mass – Unique toy and gift store carrying hard-to-find toys and gifts including board games, gag gifts, costumes, magic sets, and more.
  • Phoenix Gallery – 919 Mass – You can find works by local and regional artists at this gallery in a variety of media including ceramics, textiles, jewelry, prints, and custom stained glass.
  • Framewoods Gallery – 819 Mass – This gallery carries limited edition art by national artists plus KU art and Jayhawk memorabilia. Professional custom picture framing is also available.
  • White Chocolate – 933 Mass – Not sure what to get that skateboarder on your list? You can find decks, wheels, trucks, helmets, stickers, shoes, clothing and accessories here.
  • Sunflower Outdoor & Bike Shop – 802 Mass – Outdoors, Biking, Hiking, Camping and accessories can be found here.
  • Francis Sporting Goods – 731 Mass – a 3rd generation family owned business that was established in 1947. Their retail operation helps anchor the historical downtown Lawrence shopping district. The recently opened team warehouse enables them to better serve the rapidly growing college, junior college, high school, intramural, little league, and club team business.

Of course that’s just a short list off the top of our heads, but I know there are many many more options as well. No matter how many we think of, there are still going to be lots we miss. The best bet is to bundle up since the weather is finally nearing full blown winter & stroll down Mass Street with your Christmas list and shop locally til your heart & lists are content. Since the entertainment, shopping, and restaurant ratios are pretty wide on Mass, you could make a full day of it.

Think locally when you shop!

My take on Mangino-gate 2009

•November 25, 2009 • 2 Comments

Alright, so I have been following the story much like everybody else around here has been about the drama surrounding the current head coach of our beloved Jayhawks, Mark Mangino, and his “abusive” behaviors which result in a lot of yelling, screaming, and now poking of players.   I haven’t been throwing my thoughts out there much, since I feel like I have an inside position, since I used to work for KU Athletics for the last three years (which I left in May of this past year.)   Now that I am starting to see a bit of a backlash against Lew Perkins, I feel like it is time to say my piece.

Everybody is making a huge deal out of the fact that this is all coming out during a losing season, where our team of talented offensive seniors are not delivering on the goods the way they should have.   Yes, our season sucks, and our hope of a third tier bowl game relies on beating Missouri this coming weekend.   In reality this is not a new thing, but actually a continuation of a process that began over two years ago when we were putting together the phenomenal season which brought home the Orange Bowl trophy.   It was an exciting year, the team was enjoying the new football facilities, and on the outside everything was coming up roses.   That is until the parking attendant incident which blew the cover off the behind the scenes operations.

To make a long story short, Mangino was assigned a parking space all of 20 feet from the brand new building.   It seemed that he preferred to park his Navigator underneath the overhang which was squarely in the middle of the loading dock area.   Every single day, we would have to offload shipments of gatorade or equipment by forklift in the parking lot, and then ever so carefully ferry them around his huge ass Navigator because heaven forbid anybody would want to risk scratching it, or dare to ask him to move it.   Well that is, until the day that some young college student working for the parking department decided to tell Mangino that he could not park under the building and gave him a ticket for it, (or so the story that got back to us was something along these lines.)   Most head football coaches don’t take kindly to being told they “can’t” do something, and throw in some serious anger management issues and boom you have one Mark Mangino cussing out and basically irately jumping all over this parking attendant.   The attendant reported it up the chain, which then notified Lew’s office, and voila we have an apology issued by Mangino, and the thing seemingly blows over.

That is the public side of the story.   The insider’s view is that this confrontation got Lew to thinking he needed to take a closer look at how the football department was relating with a lot of the support functions.   He started asking a lot of questions, and heard story after story of mistreatment and abusive situations where the employees felt harrassed and belittled by members of the coaching staff.   One gentleman in particular, the director of football operations, George Matsakis, name seemed to come up a lot.   I can tell you that from my personal experience, that he is the capital A in asshole.   I can think of a whole lot of stories that involve him asking people to jump through extreme hoops, with about as much tact as an elephant in a china shop.  The more people that Lew talked to, the more issues he found out about.

This review resulted in an Athletic’s wide meeting of all the support staff headed by Lew.   In this meeting, he expressed extreme displeasure with everybody for putting up with the abuse for so long, and not bringing it to his attention.   He went on to say that he had a zero tolerance for it, and that if in the future he found out that an abusive situation had occured between the football staff and a support staff member, and it was not reported immediately to him, the support staff who suffered the abuse would be fired.  It was made clear to us that the football staff had been warned, and that they were being placed on probation with a zero tolerance for any future outbursts or belittling actions towards any of the staff.

I think that in light of this backstory, it is easy to see how as reports are starting to surface today about allegations of things getting a little too far out of control with the players of the team, this is a serious matter.   Lew has already dealt with this same issue in a private matter within the organization, and given the coaches a chance to shape up.   If the pattern continued, and in some ways it is even worse because it involves the student athletes that Lew knows we have to value above all else, it will come as no surprise if this is the end of Mangino’s tenure as the coach.

We can all argue about where tough love crosses the line into abuse, but I can tell you that everyone walks on total eggshells around the man, because they are afraid they will be the recipient of one of his famous tirades.  I do not think it is healthy, and I think we can find a competent coach with a better disposition which will lead the Jayhawks onto victory in a way that will make the university proud.

Noah Biorkman – Rest in Peace Sweet Prince

•November 23, 2009 • 13 Comments

After a long battle with Stage IV Neruorblastoma cancer, Monday morning at 8:02 AM, Noah Biorkman passed away at his home in South Lyon, Michigan.

You may remember a blog post that I wrote a couple weeks ago regarding Noah Biorkman and his Christmas wish. The family updated their Care Page about 40 minutes ago with this message…

Scott and I, along with our families, would like to thank everyone for the continued support over the past few years during Noah’s illness. As most of you know, Noah has received more than one million Christmas cards over the past few weeks. The outpouring of love and compassion has been remarkable and we are extremely grateful. We are now asking for everyone please respect our privacy during this very difficult time. The funeral services will be for family only. We are asking that instead of sending cards and flowers to Scott and me; please make a donation in Noah’s name to either of the organizations below. With your donation, Noah’s legacy will live on for many years to come, if not forever.

Thank you so much for your support and love.

Sincerely,
The Biorkman Family

Jayhawk Prayer

•November 22, 2009 • Leave a Comment

Our Father, who art in Lawrence,
Hallowed be thy Game.
Thy tourney come,
Thy championship will be done,
In Atlanta as it is in Allen Field House.
Give us this day our deserved victories.
And forgive us our turnovers,
As we forgive Roy who double-crossed against us.
And lead us not into defeat,
But deliver us from East Coast bias,
For Kansas is the basketball kingdom,
And the tradition,
And the glory,
For ever and ever.
Amen.

It’s that time of year again… Thank God for KU Basketball!
